Catechesis: "The Epistle of Love" with St. Augustine

Catechesis Series:
Reading “The Epistle of Love” with St. Augustine

New Catechesis: Reading “The Epistle of Love” with St. Augustine.

Join us for Catechesis this fall! Our focus is the highest Christlike virtue of love as described in “the epistle of love” (1 John) and taught by one of the greatest minds of the church, St. Augustine.  This seven-session catechesis will provide a timely opportunity to understand the depth of God’s love for us today through his Word and the profound insight and wisdom of one of the Church Fathers of the patristic era from his “Homilies on the First Letter of John.”

Bring your Bible and the book Love One Another, My Friends: St. Augustine’s Homilies on the First Letter of John (John Leinenweber ed.). Books will be available at Catechesis if needed.

All classes will be held before church service in The Great Room. All are welcome to attend!

Who Was Saint Augustine?

Saint Augustine of Hippo (354–430) was a North African theologian, philosopher, and bishop whose writings profoundly shaped Western Christianity; born in Thagaste (modern-day Algeria), he converted to Christianity after a youthful life marked by pursuit of rhetoric, secular ambition, and restlessness of spirit, influenced by his mother Monica’s prayers and the teachings of Ambrose of Milan. As bishop of Hippo, Augustine defended the church against Donatism and Pelagianism, articulated doctrines of original sin and divine grace, and authored seminal works such as Confessions—a lyrical spiritual autobiography—and The City of God, which reframed the relationship between the earthly polis and the heavenly order. His synthesis of classical philosophy (especially Plato and Neo-Platonism) with Christian doctrine established a theological and pastoral vision that has informed sacramental theology, liturgical practice, and Christian understandings of memory, time, and human will for centuries.
