THE BOOK OF COMMON PRAYER (2019)

BCP 2019.jpeg

The Book of Common Prayer, from the first edition of 1549, became the hallmark of a Christian way of worship and believing that was both catholic and reformed, continuous yet always renewing. According to this pattern, communities of prayer—congregations and families rather than the monasteries of the earliest centuries—would be the centers of formation and of Christ-like service to the world. This prayer book includes daily, weekly, and seasonal prayer practices along with collects and canticles. Included within is a full Psalter, or the entire Psalms from scripture.

THE DAILY OFFICE

THE LITURGICAL CALENDAR

The Christian calendar tells the story of God and His people by dividing the year into two major segments, each lasting approximately six months. The first part tells the story of Jesus – beginning in Advent with the anticipation of His birth and stretching all the way to Pentecost with the sending of the Holy Spirit. Following in this great tradition, we too are re-telling the story of Jesus. As we enter into this great drama of God’s redemption, may we hear it again, fresh and new, and find ourselves to be more than hearers – that we might discover ourselves to be participants, because Jesus’ story has become our own.

Our year as Christians in the Anglican expression is kept in time with the ancient liturgical calendar. It brings a new lesson for us each year based on what season we are in. Watch this short video on the Christian Liturgical calendar, and why it’s an important part of the Anglican life.
